Minnesota’s attorney general is urging federal regulators to tighten phone company rules aimed at blocking illegal robocalls to prevent scams.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced Tuesday that he joined a bipartisan coalition of 50 attorneys general urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to strengthen its “Know Your Customer” rules.
It pointed to Americans receiving more than 29.6 billion scam robocalls and texts last year and losing nearly $2 billion to scams.
According to a press release, illegal robocalls often begin when a voice service provider allows bad actors onto its network.
It said if scammers cannot get calls onto the U.S. communications network, they cannot make illegal robocalls.
