This is the call from the Welsh Liberal Democrats, who have urged the Welsh Government to include fire pond creation and restoration as part of the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS).
The request comes following a series of wildfires across Wales, including a 200-hectare blaze in Blaenavon which has been burning for 10 days.
"The Sustainable Farming Scheme is about rewarding farmers for delivering public goods.
"Fire ponds improve climate resilience, support biodiversity, and help protect communities, so they should be an eligible part of the Scheme."
Jane Dodds, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said: "Supporting the creation of fire ponds through the Sustainable Farming Scheme would be a practical investment in protecting rural communities, strengthening our resilience to extreme weather, and helping safeguard Wales' countryside for future generations."
