Professors push ‘antiracism’ therapy to train ‘white allies’ at psychology conference

She advocated for psychologists to use “motivational interviewing to help white allies overcome their ambivalence in their antiracism commitment.” Watson-Singleton said the “main goal is to help white individuals become better allies.” She also described an APA training for “white allies” called “Step Up and Step Back” where white attendees learned how to advocate for antiracism without centering themselves. She said “white allies” need to be taught “how to regulate the anxiety that gets activated when their white racial identity is brought to the fore.”
