Paloma Schneideman’s debut, Big Girls Don’t Cry, executive produced by Jane Campion, offers a portrait of queer adolescence in a sleepy New Zealand beach town in the mid-2000s.
Desperate to reinvent herself, Sid becomes caught between childhood and adolescence as she searches for belonging among a group of older teenagers.
Rain Spencer, Noah Taylor, Tara Canton, Ngātaitangirua Hita, Beatrix Rain Wolfe, and Poroaki Merritt-McDonald round out the cast.
The film was made with support from the New Zealand Film Commission, the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate, Hinterland Creative, Images & Sound, A Wave In the Ocean, and other key partners.
Big Girl’s Don’t Cry opens the New Zealand International Film Festival this month, before screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August and receiving a wider release via Madman on October 8.
