As the use of prediction markets continues to rise, Governor Tim Walz has signed an executive order barring state employees from using nonpublic information for insider trading on those platforms. The decision comes after a federal judge blocked a new state law that attempted to ban prediction markets in Minnesota. “State employees serve the public and shouldn’t make money off insider information,” said Governor Walz. The executive order prohibits state agency employees from using confidential information gained through their jobs to bet in prediction markets, whether they profit or lose money. Employees who break the order could face discipline action, including discharge.
