Mike Barley, 70, was a detective sergeant based at Fulham police station when 25-year-old Ms Lamplugh vanished on July 28, 1986.
Ms Lamplugh was last seen after leaving her office in Fulham to show client “Mr Kipper” a property.
“Prior to 1986 people rarely spoke about personal safety and risk assessments,” he said.
Following Suzy’s disappearance, her parents established the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, which continues to campaign on personal safety issues.
Mr Barley is co-author of Suzy Lamplugh: The Inside Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Missing Person Investigation.
