Astronomers finally find strong evidence that Betelgeuse isn’t alone

But now, astronomers have uncovered a new twist in its story: Betelgeuse is not alone.
French astronomer Miguel Montargès and colleagues obtained the sharpest image yet of Betelgeuse B, a dim companion star circling the giant with ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT).
The team then analyzed the data with sophisticated planet-hunting post-processing techniques to reveal the companion star.
The team found Betelgeuse B to be two to three times more massive than the Sun, far larger than earlier predictions.
Astronomers plan to observe Betelgeuse B again when it appears on the opposite side of the star, to confirm its orbit.
