Workers at the AI companies have shared an open letter with colleagues that urges the US to support an international effort to set the pace for building more advanced AI systems when necessary, the report said.
Anthropic previously suggested creating a system where governments and AI developers could jointly decide when to slow AI work to prevent risks.
"It would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause" AI work that may be dangerous, the company said in June.
Last week, OpenAI disclosed that its most advanced AI models hacked tech startup Hugging Face in an "unprecedented" incident, which led to renewed calls for restrictions on the technology.
