The 1974 lyric Glen Campbell thought defined his legacy: “It just blew me away”By the time that Glen Campbell released his version of ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ in 1975, his legacy should already have been more than assured.
Though the lyrics were written by Larry Weiss, Campbell later went on to describe the song by saying that “I thought it was my autobiography set to song”.
That universality allowed listeners to hear their own ambitions reflected in the song just as clearly as Campbell heard his.
Throughout his career, he had a remarkable ability to inhabit songs written by other people so completely that they became inseparable from his own story.
Much like Jimmy Webb’s finest compositions had become synonymous with Campbell’s voice, Larry Weiss’ words ceased to feel borrowed the moment Campbell sang them with such conviction.
