STOCKTON, Calif. — What began as an armed bank robbery involving three hostages became an hourlong rolling gun battle through two California cities, ending with more than 600 rounds fired by police. During a recent episode of the “Shots Fired” podcast, Freer walked hosts Kyle Shoberg and Mark Redlich through the July 16, 2014, Bank of the West robbery, pursuit and shootout. “There were multiple guys that came over at multiple time points in the pursuit,” Freer recalled. He credited the dispatcher and more experienced officers with calmly relaying information even as patrol vehicles were struck. An independent review later found that 33 officers fired their weapons at four locations during the incident, discharging more than 600 rounds.
