ST. PAUL — A federal judge on Monday, July 27, temporarily blocked Minnesota’s prediction market ban from taking effect Aug. 1. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit also argued Minnesota’s ban violates First Amendment rights by prohibiting advertising and preventing them from receiving information on prediction markets from third parties. She said a preliminary injunction prohibiting the attorney general from enforcing Minnesota’s prediction market statute “strikes the right balance of harms while preserving the status quo.” Following the ruling, Walz signed an executive order Tuesday prohibiting state employees from using non-public information for insider trading on prediction markets. He said he’s “proud” Minnesota is the first state in the nation to ban prediction markets “to protect Minnesota consumers.”
