Somerton Road had been closed between Chepstow Road and Somerton Bridge since June 8 as part of a major gas infrastructure upgrade by Wales & West Utilities. The work forms part of a wider scheme to replace more than seven kilometres of ageing gas pipes across east Newport. A spokesman for Newport Bus said: "We have been informed that Somerton Rd has reopened. Though Newport Bus originally warned the closure could last as long as nine weeks, the road has reopened ahead of schedule. Somerton Road was one of several affected as part of a wider scheme focused on improving the region’s gas network.
