Bank of Ghana flags 48% rise in digital finance fraud, tightens consumer protection

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) says reported fraud cases in the country’s digital financial services sector increased by 48% in 2025, prompting the central bank to strengthen oversight of digital payment providers and consumer protection measures.
He explained that trust in digital financial services depends on customers being confident that their money is secure and readily accessible.
Mr Asare disclosed that the BoG is reviewing licensing requirements for digital financial service providers while enhancing consumer protection standards.
We have demonstrated that we are prepared to do so when the integrity of the financial system demands it.
Mr Asare also stressed the need to improve digital financial literacy, saying greater public awareness is essential to helping users identify and avoid online financial scams.
