This commemorative coin is part of a series authorized by Congress in 2020 through a bipartisan bill, allowing the Treasury Secretary to issue $1 coins in 2026 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. While the design is still a draft, it echoes historical precedents, such as the 1926 sesquicentennial half dollar that featured then-sitting President Calvin Coolidge for the 150th anniversary of independence.
