Article – Vihan Dalal – Local Democracy ReporterWest Coast leaders have reacted angrily to Greenpeace action in a local forest, in protest at the Conservation Amendment Bill. Greenpeace says it has re-created the Native Forest Action tree occupation, a controversial protest in the Charleston forests near Westport in the 1990s before the incoming Labour government brought an abrupt end to native forest logging in 2001. Greenpeace announced today [July 28] it has unfurled an 18 square metre banner from a giant rimu tree in an unnamed West Coast forest, to coincide with World Conservation Day. Greymouth Mayor Tania Gibson said the protest was “scaremongering”. Protests were aimed at those in the likes of Wellington and Auckland, where people often did not understand the West Coast perspectives, she said.
