Bangladesh’s era of cheap domestic gas is ending, and the country will remain dependent on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) for years to meet demand, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku said yesterday.
Half of the country’s LNG supply has been disrupted due to the fire at the FSRU, a special vessel that stores liquefied natural gas and regasifies it for distribution.
“After this fire, we cannot supply gas.
One thing is clear: our domestic gas can no longer meet the country’s demand.
LNG now accounts for more than 35 percent of the gas supply as domestic production declines, requiring significant foreign currency spending.
