A fourth wildland firefighter has died of injuries he sustained while responding to a wildfire in western Colorado late last month. Matthews was a firefighter with the U.S. Wildland Fire Service assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew. “This is another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family,” U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy said in a statement. Matthews is the fifth wildland firefighter to die from injuries sustained in the line of duty while battling wildfires in Colorado this year. Tragedies like this greatly impact all of the firefighters serving in Colorado and across the country, but know that you do not mourn alone.
