Still "Smearing the Queer"? Why the Use of LGBTQ Slurs Persists
[]
Psychology Today: The Latest
LGBTQ slurs are everywhere—from day-to-day conversations, to social media, to shows, movies, and songs, we all hear LGBTQ slurs.
In my recent book, Interrogating the Use of LGBTQ Slurs: Still Smearing the Queer?
Across a range of LGBTQ slurs, young men report substantially more LGBTQ slur usage when compared to older men and all women.
In Communities: Elect LGBTQ-supportive leaders; provide LGBTQ educational classes and workshops; host LGBTQ community events; provide best practices training for first responders, healthcare workers, government-based providers, community service providers, and youth service leaders; establish community LGBTQ social groups; recognize LGBTQ awareness days; provide LGBTQ books at public libraries; display LGBTQ public art, museum exhibits, and welcoming signage (e.g., the rainbow flag).
We can work together to reduce the cultural presence of LGBTQ slurs online, in schools, and in communities to make the world a safer place for LGBTQ people.
