After 16 years working together under an intergovernmental agreement, Eugene Springfield Fire will separate into independent services. The city of Eugene announced the decision in a news release posted in early July, with comments from Eugene City Manager Jenny Haruyama, Springfield City Manager Nancy Newton and Fire Chief Mike Caven. Since July 2010, the cities of Eugene and Springfield have consolidated their fire and emergency services while working in phases to fully merge. At the end of 2025, the Eugene City Council decided that the merger was not working for firefighters under the current model. In January, the Springfield City Council came to the same conclusion.
