Four agricultural organisations have joined forces to support a national strategy against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), establishing a unified front on biosecurity, prevention, and outbreak preparedness. In a joint statement released by the Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU), the organisation confirmed it has partnered with the Namibia National Farmers Union (NNFU), the Namibia Emerging Commercial Farmers Union (NECFU), and the Previously Disadvantaged Namibian Farmers Union (PDNFU). They also called on the private sector, financial institutions and development partners to strengthen funding efforts through the FMD Support Fund to support strategic FMD prevention and preparedness investments. From the NAU, Thinus Pretorius explained the reasoning behind the four unions’ decision to collaborate rather than act independently, describing the initiative and the FMD Support Fund as complementary outcomes of the partnership. NNFU’s Adolf Muremi confirmed that the FMD Support Fund is an independently audited Section 21 company with a board comprising one representative from each union and four independent experts.
