So hearing that the average U.S. household is now worth about $1.37 million might sound disconnected from reality.
Federal Reserve data shows household and nonprofit net worth climbed to roughly $183 trillion during the first quarter of this year.
Divide that by about 133.7 million U.S. households, and the average household's net worth comes to approximately $1.37 million.
That's very different from saying the typical family is worth $1.37 million.
That's why economists often look at the median household net worth instead.
