A Lane County grand jury indicted 20 year-old Angel Gabriel Martinez for the death of University of Oregon Ph.D. candidate Erick Munene Njue. Martinez was also charged with second-degree criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, according to court documents filed on July 22. Njue was a former high school teacher from Kenya pursuing a Ph.D. in special education from UO’s College of Education. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education and literature and a master’s degree in linguistics from the University of Nairobi before coming to UO, where he completed an additional master’s degree in education policy and leadership. Njue’s death sparked community pushback against rising traffic deaths in Eugene, and the city announced it plans to replace one of Patterson’s travel lanes with a bus and bike lane with the goal of making the roads safer for residents.
