SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won has been ordered to pay his former wife Roh Soh-yeong the largest property division ever awarded in a Korean divorce. The Seoul Family Court largely sided with Chey in December 2022, awarding Roh 100 million won in consolation money and 66.5 billion won in property division. How property division works in KoreaArticle 839-2 of the Civil Act gives either spouse a claim to divide property after divorce. Seoul Family Court awards stood at about 23 million won in 1991, dipped to 19 million won in 2010, and reached 24 million won by 2014, with current practice recommending 20 million to 30 million won. Roh's 2 billion won is roughly eighty times the working average and the largest such award on record.
