As defending champion, and fastest qualifier early in the day, Firth was favourite to retain her title. “But, you know what, I went out there and I tried my hardest and I came away with a bronze medal so I can’t complain. “To come back two years later, after having Charlotte, and getting a bronze medal and being back up there on the podium… it’s tough, it’s hard for women. “I think it’s just good that I went out there, I tried my hardest and I got a medal.” And for as magical as the memories are of Birmingham four years ago, having Charlotte watching on set this experience apart.
