These areas were previously under the control of the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Following their entry, extrajudicial executions, looting, kidnappings, and the displacement of thousands of people towards Al Obeid and other nearby areas were reported.
North Kordofan has become a strategic front because it connects Khartoum and the center of the country with Darfur, and its capital, Al Obeid, is a key logistical and military hub.
