Unfortunately, we have seen large protests in US history before when someone has been killed – in 1968, civil rights activist Martin Luther King was assassinated. In addition, back then, the entire country was gripped by protests against the Vietnam War. But America overcame this – civil rights were guaranteed to Black Americans (although we still see problems with their enforcement to this day), and the US also withdrew from Vietnam. Now, however, we once again see America torn apart. Yet this is precisely what freedom of opinion and speech is about, a principle that has characterized America since its independence in 1776.
