It has slowly grown to include siblings, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren — a family tree returning each summer to the same patch of northern Minnesota woods. Today, the family occupies 13 or 14 cabins at Timber Trail Lodge on Farm Lake outside Ely. The wildfires burning in and around the BWCAW have turned what should be a simple vacation into a series of anxious calculations. A favorite stretch of lake where children can navigate in the dark and grandparents know every bend in the shoreline. Much of the coverage of the northern Minnesota fires has focused on acres burned, evacuations ordered, economic losses and climate trends.
