A white sheet, a UV light and a whole new world of Minnesota moths

During a single five-hour stretch Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve in Savage in May, he counted 64 different moth species.
Moths vs. butterfliesWhen it comes to choosing a moth that stands out, Tomazin said, "Luna moths are my very favorite."
They get the most attention with bright colors and daylight hours that make them easier to see, but they comprise only a fraction of moth species.
Having a white backdrop, such as a screen or sheet or even foamboard near a UV light makes it easier to see them.
Any light will draw some moths, but a UV light specifically for insects will attract the largest variety of species.
