The nature of the episode would not normally trigger Article 4 consultations, in this case Estonia used the backdrop of the Polish crisis as a stepping stone. We could ask two things from these negotiations: that additional measures to support Ukraine be taken to resolve this situation; that NATO Secretary General Rutte, even if only in general terms and in one sentence, say at a press conference in the near future that «NATO has clear red lines in collective defense and it is natural for us to use force for defensive purposes when these are crossed.»This does not mean that every subsequent air violator will be shot down (that may not be reasonable). But we must demonstrate our readiness to use force, including by avoiding situations like the one we just had in Romania, where two F-16s escorted a drone that had violated NATO airspace for 50 minutes until it reached Ukrainian airspace.
