Health unit urges residents to prevent mosquito bites after first positive mosquito sample of the season is confirmedThe Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) has confirmed the first detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes in Renfrew County and District this year after the virus was found in a mosquito sample collected in Arnprior.
RCDHU monitors West Nile virus activity each summer using 13 mosquito trapping locations across Renfrew County and District.
Article contentWhile infected mosquitoes have now been identified locally, the health unit says there have been no human cases of West Nile virus reported in Renfrew County and District so far this year.
“RCDHU has received confirmation of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in Renfrew County and District,” said Dr. Jason Morgenstern, medical officer of health for RCDHU.
West Nile virus is spread to people through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
