Geekwire, the nation's leading tech, startup and business tracking magazine, began to cover this effort years ago when it launched in Seattle. That's when, in 2020, entrepreneur Katrina Spade launched a company called Recompose. It didn't used to be, but with legal help from an attorney who was intrigued by the Recompose idea, six years later, it's legal. Human remains are placed in a chamber with organic materials and conditions that will turn them into organic, eco-safe fertilizer. Recompose costs around $7,000, vs. a basic cremation cost of anywhere from $800 to $1,500 in WA.
