RUC patrol stopped by armed men before South Armagh double murder: On This Day in 1976
[]
Irish News
The men were gunned to death on August 24 last at Altmamackin, Newtownhamilton, 600 yards from the Louth Border and a quarter of a mile from where the three-man RUC patrol was stopped.
Mr Farmer, a father of four young boys was hit by six bullets and Mr McCartney by four.
The Coroner for Co Armagh Mr Noel Anderson described the men as the unfortunate victims of cold blooded murder.
He became suspicious, as he knew there was no army or UDR patrols operating out of this base at Newtownhamilton.
When the man asked for the driver’s license witness noticed he was not a native of south Armagh.
