The gimmicky replacing the gormless – that would appear to be a reasonable summary of events in Downing Street this week, as Britain witnessed its fifth prime minister in four years. His most ridiculous claim is that power will be taken out of Downing Street and into “every postcode in the land.” His apparent master stroke is to produce a ten-year plan sometime soon. However, as anyone involved in strategic planning knows, a ten-year plan is fantasy. Unless Burnham undoes much of what Thatcher did, he too may soon have to walk from Downing Street.
