Matthew 20:20–22Among the Twelve Apostles, two were named James: James the Greater, son of Zebedee, and James the Lesser, son of Alpheus. Jesus responds with a gentle yet penetrating question: “Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?” We, too, must drink Christ’s chalice of selfless and sacrificial love, willingly laying down our lives in countless ways. In the Apostles, and also in other Christians, the paradox of Jesus' life is verified: his death is the cause of life for all men.
