Frozen in a tropical lagoonRu Smith from the Yorkshire Geological Society found the fossil while leading a geology walk in the park. "I saw something unusual – a distinctive skull bone of a large fish," he said. At that point, what's now Roundhay Park sat beneath a vast tropical lagoon, which is how a prehistoric fish ended up preserved in a piece of rock on a hillside in north Leeds. Smith described coelacanths as "pretty amazing fish" and said the discovery was a reminder of what geology can reveal. Donated to Leeds museumsThe fossil has been given to Leeds Museums and Galleries and added to the natural sciences collection at the city's Discovery Centre.
