They could not lose him for draft picks, especially picks that would have likely been in the middle or even back-end of the first-round. And just because it is an overpay does not necessarily mean it is going to be a problem. Or that he will not be a good player. He not only will be a good player, he already is an outstanding player and only getting better. Not only because he has another year of experience in the NHL under his belt, but also because he is a wildly talented player that is going to be playing on a talented team, full of offense, that is probably going to need to outscore its defensive problems.
