On July 20, President Donald Trump announced a new 50% tariff on many Canadian imports, in the latest escalation of a trade war between the U.S. and Canada that was initially triggered by Trump last year.These latest tariffs are set to take effect in mid-August. This announcement was followed on Friday by long-teased tariffs on imports of 60 economies that comprise about 99% of U.S. trade. Trump’s tariffs are costly. The Tax Foundation has estimated that “in 2025, the Trump tariffs amounted to an average tax increase of $1,000 per US household.” Yet now that Trump has again imposed what is effectively a tax paid by American consumers, the network is turning away.
