It marks the first time the family has spoken publicly after Ruiz was shot and killed by a Madison police officer Wednesday, July 22.
Corey Ruiz's mom was emotional throughout the press conference as she spoke about her son, remembering him as an "exceptional guy."
Video captured by bystanders shows the moment several Madison police officer tried to detain Ruiz near the city's east side.
Now, Ruiz's family has hired prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
