Srinagar, July 24: Senior CPI(M) leader and MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Friday condemned the killing of a police personnel at Lal Chowk in Anantnag, calling it a “deeply unfortunate and highly condemnable” incident. Addressing a press conference, Tarigami expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said the Jammu and Kashmir Police have been performing their duties under extremely challenging circumstances. However, Tarigami cautioned against indiscriminate arrests following such incidents, saying such measures have repeatedly proved counterproductive. “There are reports from various parts of South Kashmir about large-scale arrests after the Anantnag incident. Referring to the decades of violence in Jammu and Kashmir, Tarigami said the people have suffered immensely and that restoring public confidence was essential to effectively tackle violence.
