A celebration marking the much-delayed opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Ontario and Michigan took place July 24, reports CNBC. On July 21, Canadian leaders told Michigan officials the planned joint U.S.-Canada event would not go ahead. "The July 24, 2026, event for the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been cancelled," according to an email sent late on July 21 from the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority to one U.S. elected official, reports The Detroit News. Whether the Customs & Border Patrol staff needed to receive traffic on the U.S. side are actually deployed on that day remains to be seen. On July 21, Canada announced a "proposed agreement in principle" under which Canada, which paid for the bridge, will receive 50% of net toll revenues for the first 15 years of the bridge's operation.
