North American researchers into wild populations of gray wolves recently recorded previously unseen behavioral adaptations in the wild. Using long term camera trap data and sophisticated tracking techniques using GPS, the researchers documented wild wolves fishing opportunistically, changing their usual pack communication, and even using man-made structures to help them to move swiftly through difficult terrain. The unprecedented observations provide new understanding into the intelligence and ecological fitness of dogs.
