A trade union leader in exile is urging Labor to implement tougher penalties on his home country. Muang Muang, who has a warrant for his arrest since a 2021 coup in the country, is in Australia for the Labor conference, making the case for greater penalties. "There have been resolutions passed by the parliament and there have been sanctions passed by the government, but sanctions need to be enforced, otherwise these are just papers. Myanmar trade union president Maung Maung will call on Labor support for stronger sanctions. Mr Maung said ideal action from Labor would be passing a motion similar to that implemented by the UN's International Labour Organisation.
