Beijing has protested President Donald Trump's new tariffs on China and 59 other countries.
Imports from Japan, South Korea and Vietnam—the U.S.' fifth, sixth, and ninth largest trading partners, respectively—are also subject to the 12.5 percent rate.
"The United States has had a forced labor import ban for nearly a century, and rigorously enforces it; it's well past time for our trading partners to do the same."
Critics warn broad tariffs—which are effectively a tax paid by importers—will raise prices for consumers, disrupt supply chains and strain relations with trading partners.
The Section 301 tariffs come as Washington and Beijing climb down from the tit-for-tat trade tensions that characterized much of 2025.
