Lam, the Conservative MP for Weald of Kent, said the justification for the project was "a complete joke" and that diverting funds away from struggling parishes was "absurd". "The Church of England is planning to give away £100m in slavery reparations and their justification is a complete joke," she said in a video posted on X. "The problem is that it turns out that the supposed link between the Church and slavery is fake. The Church of England's July meeting of the General Synod confirmed that over £1.15m has already been spent on Project Spire.
