For the third time in two years, critics have accused the legal system of failing to deliver justice after grand juries absolved Akron officers of wrongdoing. In April 2023, a grand jury voted against bringing charges in the shooting death of Jayland Walker. In 2023, a Summit County grand jury declined to indict eight officers in the shooting of Walker. In August, a grand jury chose not to indict officer Michael Novak in the death of Jones. The two men then struggled before the officer shot Jones.
