This quote is astutely used by Yellowstone National Park historical archivist Lee H. Whittlesey to begin the Introduction section in his brilliant 1995 book titled “Death in Yellowstone, Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First National Park.” The book begins in 1870 and describes in sometimes gory details (with Yellowstone archive pictures) how a park, specifically Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, can kill. I’ve been to Yellowstone National Park three times. Yellowstone is not only one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but also one of the most dangerous — even at a safe distance.
