'Catastrophe'Overstretched firefighters battling around the clock for days have been unable to contain the infernos, which claimed the lives of two French firefighters near Bordeaux earlier this week. Tinderbox conditionsThe fires in Spain and France spread rapidly because of tinderbox conditions worsened by successive heatwaves both countries have experienced since May. France deployed 1,500 soldiers and 1,700 security personnel to assist firefighters near Bordeaux, and on Saturday an A400M military transport aircraft joined the fleet of smaller planes already dousing the flames. Wildfires currently raging across France have burnt nearly 98,000 hectares (242,000 acres) – a "historic record", Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said.
