The City of Vernon is becoming an official partner in the Okanagan Basin Water Board’s (OBWB) annual Make Water Work campaign to help curb local water usage as the region faces a fourth consecutive year of drought. The primary goal of the campaign is to reduce residential outdoor watering, which represents the second-largest use of water in the Okanagan behind agriculture. "Even in years with abundant water, reducing demand lowers water treatment and pumping costs, extends infrastructure life, and reduces pressure on future utility rates," the motion noted. "The Make Water Work campaign also decreases demand on city staff by providing ready-to-use communications materials and coordinated regional messaging."
