The PSNI and MI5 have been ordered top pay one of Ireland’s best known journalists £20,000 after he was placed under illegal state surveillance. It published an open judgment on Thursday and ordered MI5 and the PSNI to pay £10,000 each in damages. The tribunal panel was also been told that Mr Kearney “seems to have been targeted more than any other journalist in Northern Ireland”. In welcoming the judgement, Mr Kearney said he was “delighted that the court has penalised those responsible for breaking the law. PSNI chief constable Jon Boutcher apologised to Mr Kearney.
