“We’re getting the change in the shape of the beach and the part of the beach that’s underwater too,” Krafft said.
For now, the peninsula has been deemed off-limits to beachgoers, but that’s just until all the water and sand settle.
“We put the signs to keep people off intentionally because you never know if there’s going to be a pocket of the sand that’s recently placed,” MCFall said.
The Army Corps will also watch to see if the altered water currents as a result of the peninsula mean beach replenishment is needed less frequently to the south of Silver Beach.
However, McFall says the main purpose of this peninsula experiment is to “get a lot of stuff on the beach more cheaply.”
